This month, our members have contributed to a wide range of important topics in cancer care. Recent publications explore the management of immunotherapy side effects, models of care coordination for brain tumour patients, and the nurse’s role in transitioning patients from curative to palliative care. Other articles examine preferences for telephone-based cancer support, trauma-informed approaches to procedural care, patient education needs, and survivorship care for BMT and younger women. Additional research looks at pain management strategies and the adequacy of imaging reports in pancreatic cancer staging.

This month’s publications span critical care, digital health, ethics, survivorship, and supportive care. From CPR decision-making and interpreter use to AI in healthcare and prostate cancer nursing, CNSA members are leading important conversations across the cancer care continuum.

This month’s research features new insights into breast cancer survivorship, economic evaluations, paediatric genetic risk, and digital models of care. Highlights include patient-reported outcomes in cancer trials, First Nations health workforce experiences, and innovations in managing pleural effusions, molar pregnancies, and radiation dermatitis.

CNSA members’ March 2025 research spans financial toxicity, self-management, treatment adherence, and survivorship. Studies highlight immunotherapy complications, burnout, grief support, and patient-clinician interactions. Other topics include oral anti-cancer medication trends, cancer center attributes, exercise in cancer care, PET imaging in melanoma, and venous access complications.

CNSA members’ April 2025 publications address survivorship in advanced cancer, prehabilitation, palliative care needs, and equity in radiotherapy access. Research explores catheter care, vulvar cancer wound practices, culturally inclusive cancer information, and lifestyle interventions. Additional studies examine technology in paediatric nursing, patient motivation for exercise, and national care improvement strategies—highlighting the profession’s commitment to quality, equity, and innovation in cancer care.

CNSA members have recently published research spanning workforce, care, and survivorship. Highlights include a national survey on the roles and responsibilities of radiation oncology nurses, quality indicators for head and neck cancer care, the impact of anal cancer treatment on female sexuality, neurotoxicity in CAR T-cell therapy, global childhood cancer survivorship, perceptions of pain care in Parkinson’s disease, and endorsement of a tool to assess cancer-related cognitive impairment impacts.

CNSA members continue to contribute to vital cancer nursing research, with new publications this month covering patient-reported outcomes, survivorship care, palliative care, nurse-led models, and workforce insights. From clinical practice improvements to supporting early career nurses, these studies highlight the depth and diversity of our community’s expertise.

Developed by researchers at Monash University and McGrath Foundation (supported by CNSA), this project aims to develop a self-assessment tool specifically designed for specialist cancer nurses who provide care to people with cancer and conduct pilot psychometric testing to examine internal consistency and known-group validity.

MASCC recently published its Supportive Care 2030 Movement with the aims of developing consensus about shared, equitable and translatable ambitions to drive excellence in and outline the desired state of supportive cancer care by 2030. In response, five major oncology nursing organizations launched a collaboration with the aim of achieving global nursing excellence and leadership within the wider interdisciplinary model of supportive cancer care.

Survivors who have received a blood or marrow transplant (BMT) require life-long follow-up care and support, however evidence-based assessments of long-term models of care are scarce. This qualitative descriptive study explored the perspectives of blood and marrow transplant (BMT) specialist nurses and physicians, and General Practitioners (GPs) regarding the long-term management and follow-up care of BMT survivors.

Collecting self-reported health data directly from patients is increasingly recognised as having the potential to improve patients’ outcomes, and the 2023 Australian Cancer Plan (ACP) prioritised embedding PRO collection into national quality care monitoring.

It is well established that people diagnosed with cancer often experience poor mental health, yet there are still inequities in access to appropriate care and support. This study set out to explore perceptions and experiences of mental health support, including facilitators and barriers, among people with cancer to help inform national cancer policy development in Australia. CNSA's Policy Officer, Dr Clare Lynex, is the lead author of this interesting and relevant piece of research.
