Introducing the Cancer Survivorship Community of Practice

CNSA is launching a new Cancer Survivorship Community of Practice (CoP), bringing cancer nurses together to connect, share, and build capability in one of the fastest-growing areas of cancer care.

As more people live longer after a cancer diagnosis, survivorship care is becoming increasingly complex. Nurses play a central role in shaping how this care is delivered, and this CoP has been designed to support that work. It offers a practical, collaborative space to explore models of care, share experiences, and learn from peers across different settings.

The CoP will be led by Leilani Way, Nurse Navigator and Clinical Nurse Consultant at the Mater Statewide Cancer Survivorship Service, and Kim Kerin-Ayres, Nurse Practitioner at the Sydney Cancer Survivorship Centre. Kim brings deep experience in survivorship care and has supported Leilani in building a sustainable survivorship clinic, ensuring discussions are grounded in real-world practice.

What this Community of Practice will focus on

This CoP is designed to be interactive and shaped by members, with a focus on:

  • Exploring practical models of survivorship care, including nurse-led approaches
  • Sharing lessons learned and real-world experiences
  • Identifying challenges, gaps, and opportunities in survivorship
  • Supporting local implementation of survivorship services
  • Creating a safe, peer-supported space for discussion and learning

First session: Building a survivorship clinic | Date: 20 May

The inaugural session will focus on an established model of care. Kim will share her experience and provide an overview of Concord Cancer Centre's Survivorship Model of Care.

Participants will then be invited to help shape the future direction of the CoP by sharing priority topics, challenges, and areas where further support or resources are needed. This co-design approach ensures the sessions remain relevant, practical, and aligned to the needs of cancer nurses.
