World Radiotherapy Awareness Day: recognising radiation oncology nurses
For CNSA, it is also an important opportunity to recognise the specialised contribution of radiation oncology nurses. Radiation therapy can be highly technical and unfamiliar for patients, and nurses play a central role in helping people understand what to expect, preparing them for treatment and providing continuity throughout their care.
Radiation oncology nurses assess and manage symptoms and treatment-related toxicities, provide education and supportive care, coordinate across multidisciplinary teams and recognise when clinical intervention or escalation is required. Their expertise is increasingly important as patients move between radiation therapy, systemic anti-cancer treatment, surgery and supportive or palliative care.
CNSA is proud to support radiation oncology nurses through our Radiation Oncology Nurses (RON) Specialist Practice Network, providing a national community for connection, shared learning and professional development. This World Radiotherapy Awareness Day, we encourage members to recognise their radiation oncology colleagues and celebrate the expertise they bring to cancer care every day.
