New free course builds confidence in discussing sexual health and cancer
Sexual Health and Cancer was developed by the VCCC Alliance and the University of Sydney in collaboration with people with lived experience of cancer, healthcare professionals from diverse settings and subject matter experts.
The course forms part of the Sexual Function and Intimacy Concerns in Cancer Care (SexFICC) Project, funded through the Australian Government’s Cancer Patient Support Program.
Sexual function and intimacy concerns are common during and after cancer treatment, but they are not always raised in clinical conversations. Healthcare professionals may be unsure how to introduce the topic, what questions to ask or what support and interventions are available.
The course provides practical, evidence-based guidance to help healthcare professionals:
- understand how cancer and its treatment can affect sexual health, body image, relationships and quality of life;
- initiate sensitive and inclusive conversations;
- identify and assess sexual function and intimacy concerns;
- provide appropriate information, support and referrals; and
- respond to the needs of people from diverse communities.
An innovative AI-simulated conversation tool also allows participants to practise challenging discussions in a safe, judgement-free environment before applying their learning in clinical practice.
The course considers the needs of adolescents and young adults, older people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people living with disability and LGBTIQA+ communities.
While initially developed for cancer, haematology and community nurses, the course and accompanying learning hub are relevant to doctors, allied health professionals and other healthcare providers working with people affected by cancer.
