Introducing GyN Care: A National Resource for Gynaecological Cancer Nursing
What is GyN Care?
Built by nurses, for nurses, GyN Care is a national guidance resource that brings together the knowledge, tools and clinical considerations required to deliver high-quality, consistent care for Australians affected by gynaecological cancers.
It is being developed to:
- Support best practice, evidence-informed care across the cancer continuum
- Provide practical, accessible tools and resources for nurses
- Reduce variation in care provision across different settings and regions
- Strengthen confidence and capability in gynaecological cancer nursing
This resource is specifically designed for the Australian context, is informed by people with lived experience and recognises the diversity of our workforce and the environments in which cancer nurses deliver care.
Why this matters
Gynaecological cancer care is complex and varied across multiple cancer types. Nurses play a critical role in coordinating, delivering and advocating for optimal patient outcomes.
However, variation in access to education, resources and structured guidance can impact consistency of care. GyN Care aims to address this by providing a centralised, easy-to-use online platform that supports nurses wherever they practice.
Built on strong foundations
GyN Care builds on the foundational work of A/Prof Olivia Cook, whose research on the role of gynaecological cancer nurses has helped shape the direction and structure of this resource. Its development has been made possible thanks to funding support from AstraZeneca and Cancer Nurses Society of Australia.
Led by Natalie Williams, this work reflects CNSA’s broader commitment to:
- Advancing nurse-led models of care
- Supporting capability development across the workforce
- Driving national consistency in cancer nursing practice
What to expect
GyN Care will be an interactive, web-based resource hosted on the CNSA website and freely available to all.
The platform will include:
- Nursing practice recommendations aligned to key practice areas
- Easy to follow guidance for all gynaecological cancer types across stages of care
- Access to tools supporting assessment and decision-making
- Links to resources to support holistic, patient-centred care
- Content designed to be intuitive, practical and easy to navigate
The resource is currently in development and will be launched in the second half of the year.
Looking ahead: Delphi consensus process
As part of the next phase of this work, CNSA will be undertaking a national Delphi process to build consensus on key nursing practice recommendations in gynaecological cancer care.
This will ensure GyN Care continues to be:
- Clinically robust
- Nationally relevant
- Informed by the expertise of the cancer nursing workforce
We will soon be inviting expressions of interest from nurses who would like to contribute to this process and help shape the future of gynaecological cancer nursing practice in Australia.
GyN Care represents an important step forward in strengthening the visibility, consistency and impact of cancer nursing care. We look forward to sharing more in the coming months as we move closer to launch.
