Empowering Nurses in Genomics: QUT-Led Project Receives Major Federal Funding
The project will develop and evaluate the Nursing Compendium for Genomic-Informed Care (NGenCare)—a practical, co-designed resource to support nurses in facilitating genetic and genomic testing for people affected by cancer.
“Genomics promises better healthcare, but access is challenging,” said Professor Alexander. “By working across multiple Queensland Health services and focusing on nurses, who comprise a significant portion of the healthcare workforce, this project has the potential to create a more effective and equitable cancer care system.
The compendium will be co-created with input from nurses, consumers, genetic specialists, doctors, allied health professionals, learning designers, and implementation scientists. It aims to support nurses across multiple Queensland Health services to confidently engage in genomics, reducing pressure on specialist services and improving the patient experience.
CNSA warmly congratulates Professor Alexander and the entire research team on this visionary project. As genomics becomes increasingly embedded in cancer care, nurses must be equipped with the knowledge and tools to lead the way. This work highlights just how critical nursing education in genomics is to delivering on the promise of personalised medicine.
We look forward to seeing the impact of this important project on practice and outcomes in cancer nursing.
