Updated national guidance on paediatric end-of-life care

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released the second edition of the National Consensus Statement: Essential elements for safe and high-quality paediatric end-of-life care.

The updated Consensus Statement provides contemporary guidance for clinicians and health services on how end-of-life care for a child should be approached and delivered across healthcare settings.

First published in 2016, the second edition reflects current evidence, clinical practice and consultation with the paediatric palliative care sector, experts, clinicians and consumers.

The updated guidance includes a stronger focus on neonates, First Nations children, children with disability, and care in regional, rural and remote areas. It also reinforces the importance of culturally responsive, child and family-centred care.

The Consensus Statement outlines nine guiding principles and ten essential elements, with key actions to support health services to deliver safe, effective and high-quality care.

CNSA encourages members working with children, young people and families affected by cancer to review the updated guidance and consider how it can support comfort, dignity and quality of life for children approaching the end of life.
