Some people remember the doctor who diagnosed their cancer. Many remember the nurse who helped them survive it. The one who explained the treatment for the third time because shock had drowned out the first two conversations. The nurse who noticed the fear behind the brave smile. The one who stood beside families on the hardest days of their lives.
Following Cancer Nurses Day on 13 August, we simply wanted to say thank you to the thousands of cancer nurses across Australia whose expertise, compassion and unwavering commitment improve the lives of patients and families every day. You carry clinical care and emotional weight in the same shift, for patients navigating some of the hardest news anyone can receive.
Today's cancer nurses are clinicians, educators, coordinators, advocates, navigators and researchers. You guide patients through diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and, when necessary, end-of-life care; often becoming the constant presence throughout an incredibly uncertain journey.
We also recognise that caring for people with cancer in regional communities often presents unique challenges. Greater travel distances, limited specialist services and the need to support patients across vast geographic areas require remarkable adaptability and resilience. Cancer nurses continue to bridge those gaps with professionalism, innovation and genuine compassion.
At Slater and Gordon, we have the privilege of working alongside many healthcare professionals who support people affected by asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer. We see first-hand the extraordinary difference specialist cancer nurses make; not simply through clinical excellence, but through the reassurance, advocacy and humanity they bring to every patient interaction.
