Message from the President - August
Leadership Changes
I’m delighted to announce that Ellen Heywood and A/Prof Gemma McErlean have been appointed as our new Co–Vice Presidents. Both bring a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to CNSA, and their complementary skills will strengthen our Board’s leadership. Ellen will work closely with Meredith Cummins on the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee (FARC), while Gemma will support Mark Lock as he steps up as Chair of the Governance Committee. These appointments form a key part of our succession planning as my term concludes in June 2026.
I also want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Meredith for her outstanding contribution as Vice President over the past three years. Meredith has been a wonderful support to me in the President role and a strong advocate for the profession. I’m very pleased that she will continue as Chair of FARC for her final 12 months on the Board, supported by Ellen.
We’re also excited to be establishing three new Committees — Advocacy, Early Career, and Annual Congress — which will open up new opportunities for members to get involved and help shape CNSA’s future. Look out for these calls for nominations soon.
Cancer Nurses Day & Workforce Survey
With Cancer Nurses Day this Thursday, 14 August, we are ready to celebrate and recognise the incredible impact of cancer nurses across Australia. This year, we’re thrilled to have the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, Hon Rebecca White MP, actively involved in our celebrations — a strong sign of growing recognition of our profession at the national level.
Just as important is the Cancer Nursing Workforce Survey. By completing it, you’re contributing to the evidence base that underpins our advocacy and ensures our workforce is supported for the future. Your input is essential.
Recent and Upcoming Activities
Over the past month, I’ve had the privilege of representing CNSA at the Cancer Workforce Workshop and the National Cancer Data Indicators Workshop, as well as attending the ACCN Showcase. Next month, I’m looking forward to CanForum, which will be an important opportunity for collaboration and strategic discussion.
Get Involved
Volunteering is at the heart of CNSA’s success. Joining a committee not only shapes our work but also helps build your skills and networks. If you’re interested, I encourage you to nominate for one of our committees — your expertise and perspective are invaluable.
It’s also a great time to refer your colleagues and friends to join CNSA, with our special introductory membership rate of $110 to celebrate Cancer Nurses Day in August, covering membership through to 31 March 2026. Tell them to include the special code CND2025 when they sign up for the discount to be applied!
Thank you for your continued passion and dedication — together, we are building a stronger future for cancer nursing.
Kind regards,
Anne Mellon
CNSA President
