Catherine Johnson AM Awarded CNSA Life Membership
Life Membership is one of the highest honours bestowed by CNSA and recognises individuals whose sustained commitment has shaped both the organisation and the profession. Catherine's career exemplifies these qualities.
A founding member of CNSA, Cath has been part of the Society's journey since its inception. Before CNSA was formally established, she served as Education Coordinator for the NSW COSA Nurses Group and later became a member of the Steering Committee that laid the foundations for the national organisation.
Over the past three decades, Cath has played a significant leadership role within CNSA, serving as Deputy Chair, National Treasurer and a member of the Constitution Review Steering Committee. She chaired the inaugural CNSA Winter Congress in 1998, contributed to multiple Congress Planning Committees and spent more than a decade on the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Cancer Nursing. Through these roles, she has helped shape the governance, strategic direction and professional development opportunities that continue to benefit cancer nurses today.
Alongside her leadership within CNSA, Cath has built an outstanding clinical career at Calvary Mater Newcastle, where she has cared for people affected by cancer for more than 30 years. From her early work as a Clinical Nurse Specialist through to her longstanding roles as Clinical Research Nurse, Gastrointestinal Cancer Nurse Coordinator and now Clinical Nurse Consultant, she has consistently championed evidence-based, person-centred cancer care.
Research has been a defining feature of Cath's career. She has been an investigator on numerous clinical trials and collaborative research projects that have improved understanding of gastrointestinal cancers, survivorship, care coordination, cancer prevention, patient education and supportive care. Her work has also explored financial toxicity, implementation science and improving outcomes through nurse-led models of care. Across her career she has co-authored more than 15 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters while securing competitive research funding to advance cancer nursing practice.
Cath's commitment to improving cancer care extends well beyond Australia. Through more than 16 years of service with the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC), she has been a passionate advocate for strengthening cancer nursing globally, particularly in low-resource settings. She has led international train-the-trainer programs supporting nurses across Latin America and Africa to improve cancer prevention, early detection and screening, while also contributing to numerous international committees focused on education, leadership, communications and knowledge development.
Widely respected as a mentor, collaborator and advocate, Cath has inspired generations of cancer nurses through her generosity, integrity and willingness to share her knowledge. Her colleagues consistently describe her as someone who brings people together, champions excellence and quietly influences change for the benefit of both patients and the profession.
In 2025, Cath's extraordinary contribution was recognised nationally when she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to oncology nursing and research. In the same year, she also received the Mary Potter Service Award, recognising her sustained excellence, leadership and commitment to improving outcomes for people affected by cancer.
On behalf of the Board, members and the wider cancer nursing community, CNSA congratulates Catherine Johnson AM on this well-deserved recognition.
Her career has helped shape the profession we know today, and her legacy will continue to influence cancer nursing for generations to come.
