Exploring AI and Innovation in Cancer Nursing Education: Nurse Educator CoP Update

The latest CNSA Nurse Educator Community of Practice meeting focused on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in nursing education, highlighting both the promise and challenges of integrating digital tools into contemporary teaching practice.

We were delighted to have a thought-provoking presentation from Jolene Vella, Clinical Nurse Educator at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and an update from Tia Moeke, Program Coordinator at eviQ Education.

Jolene explored the expanding use of AI to personalise learning, create realistic simulations, and streamline content delivery. Tools like OpenEvidence and Google’s Notebook LM are already helping educators and students to summarise, search and synthesise peer-reviewed research. However, concerns remain around data privacy, algorithmic bias, educator readiness, and the need for nurses to be actively involved in AI tool development to ensure relevance and safety.

The group also discussed the release of Module 1 of the Radiation Oncology Nursing Course (RONC)—a foundational program providing national standardised education for nurses in radiation oncology.

Additional updates included upcoming educational offerings such as the ADOCS course on handling anti-cancer drugs in non-cancer settings, and rapid-learning resources for bispecific antibodies.

Finally, attendees discussed exciting opportunities to collaborate on the Cancer Nursing Education Portal and Jemma Still, CNSA CEO, introduced the new APNA program Florence to the community, and suggested individuals took a look at the potential education and experience available through the platform.

CNSA sincerely thanks Jolene Vella and Tia Moeke for their insightful presentations and commitment to advancing cancer nursing education. We look forward to the new meeting on Thursday 19 June at Congress.
